Graco Children’s Products issued a voluntary recall of 403,222 child seats due to harness buckle defect. This is in addition to last month’s recall of 3.8 million for having the same buckles. The models included in this recall are the following:
- Argos 70 Elite (2006-2014)
- Ready Ride, Step 2
- My Ride 65 with Safety Surround
- My Size 70
- Head Wise 70 with Safety Surround
- Nautilus 3-in-1
- Nautilus Plus
- Smart Seat with Safety Surround
What caused the recall?
Spilt food and drink can affect the faulty buckles and, as a result, it makes it difficult to open or may become stuck. Based on reports, parents were forced to cut harnesses just to remove their children. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem increases the risk of injuries in emergencies. Graco’s recall expansion is now considered as the fourth largest child seat recall in American history. However, despite this recall expansion, NHTSA still wants the company to add 1.8 million infant car seats to the recall for the same defect. If these car seats are added, it would be the largest car seat recall. Graco stated that the infant seats are used differently than the toddler seats.
What should you do?
Owners of the recalled seats are expected to receive repair kits with instructions on how to safely clean the buckles. Graco stated that consumers can continue using the affected seats until the kit arrives. If you have a recalled child seat prior to the latest recall, you can have it replaced at no cost by ordering your replacement harness buckle using an online order form. You can also reach Graco’s customer service team by calling (800) 345-4109 or via email at [email protected]
As with any product recall, please take this seriously. A difficult to open or stuck buckle can lead to serious injury if your car is in an accident. If you’re in a hurry, you’d have to cut the harness in order to remove your child from the car seat. To help avoid this situation, please contact Graco to get the replacement kit or buy a new car seat all together. This will help keep your children safe.
