Ensuring driver safety
Auto manufacturers are doing their part in developing features in vehicles that will help reduce the impact of automobile accidents on drivers. Tech companies have also been making efforts to promote safe driving through developing apps. An example is Sprint’s Drive First, which automatically postpones calling and texting while driving. TextNoMore works as a rewards program for those avoiding texting while driving. We see that the intention is there and one Ford executive believes that what’s missing is a close coordination between app makers and car manufacturers.
Car manufacturers and smartphone apps
Ford’s head of Marketing, Jim Farley, said in his speech at the Los Angeles Auto Show that there is still a large gap between customer expectation toward cars and what it could be in their lives. Farley suggests that both sides have crucial roles to play. He stressed that the automotive and technology sectors are currently “at a tipping point.” They have to move fast to provide customers with services that will help them drive safely.

Safety tips to keep in mind
- Make sure that your phone is in silent mode or placed in a spot where it won’t distract you. If you are expecting an important call or text, safely pull over to call or respond to messages.
- Make sure you get enough rest, especially when you have a long drive ahead of you. Consider taking turns with another driver on long road trips.
- Be aware of the speed limit and never tailgate.
- Prepare for the trip. Study routes ahead of time as well as alternative ones you can use. This will help prevent you from using your phone to search for directions while driving.
- Avoid engaging in emotional conversations while behind the wheel.
