There are several different types of insurance benefits that may be available to you from your own car insurance company if the death is the result of a motor vehicle accident. These include:
- PIP/Survivor Benefits – There is $10,000 that is available for loss of services performed by the deceased. Services lost would include mowing the grass, taking the kids to school, home repairs, etc. Also, any medical bills may be paid by this insurance.
- Funeral Benefits – $1,000 is available to help cover the cost of the funeral.
- Underinsured Motorist Benefits – The insurance policy of the car the decedent was in when the accident occurred or the decedent’s own insurance policy may also have underinsured motorist benefits that cover the accident. This is optional coverage that would be available should the insurance on the vehicle that caused the death not have sufficient coverage to cover the loss of life. The amount available is dependent on the amount purchased with the policy. Multiple policies may be stackable. An attorney should be consulted to make this determination.
- Uninsured Motorist Coverage – The insurance policy of the car the decedent was in or the decedent’s insurance policy may include uninsured motorist benefits, or both. This is coverage that would be available should there be no insurance on the vehicle that caused the death and this coverage is listed on the policy. As with underinsured motorist benefits, the amount available is dependent on the amount purchased with the policy. Multiple policies may be stackable. Consult with your attorney to make this determination.
