UK Basketball Players Uninjured in Drunk Driving Accident

Auto AccidentUniversity of Kentucky basketball players, Terrence Jones and Stacey Poole, Jr. were passengers in a SUV Cadillac Escapade. This vehicle was struck by another vehicle that was driving on the wrong side of the road on East High Street near Euclid, near the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. This accident occurred on Friday, November 11, 2011. It happened just hours before the second-ranked Wildcats’ season opener against Marist. The SUV was driven by Larry Warren, a friend and former high school teammate of Jones, who said he could not avoid the accident though he veered the vehicle to avoid being hit head-on.

What caused the accident?
Warren said that they were leaving a night club when the car accident happened. They only drank bottled water and no alcohol. Coach John Calipari stated that neither of the players was charged and that no evidence of drugs or alcohol was found. According to the Herald-Leader, the driver of the other vehicle, Scott Roseberry, was charged with driving under the influence. Jones left the scene in fear of an altercation with the other driver but was later questioned by police before being treated at the hospital while Poole was questioned at the scene and was taken to UK hospital. They suffered non-life threatening injuries and experienced minor neck and back pain after the car accident.

Life could change in a blink of an eye
Warren relayed how frustrated they were and screamed right after the accident happened, “Look what stupidity can bring you when somebody’s drinking and driving. That’s how quickly we could lose our lives.” He then said following the accident, “Looking back on it, I won’t say we made a bad choice, but I could say we’ll probably think twice before we make decisions to go out.” Jones posted on his Twitter page following the accident, “Thanking God for blessing me to live and wake up this morning.”

I applaud these Kentucky basketball players for making the right decision. We are all glad that they were not injured in this drunk driving accident. It could have caused serious injury or even death. I hope that this incident will be used to educate all Kentuckians on the serious consequences of drinking and driving.
