National Safety Month: Put an End to Distracted Driving In Kentucky

We’re at the end of June, but it’s not too late to celebrate National Safety Month. In 2013, the theme was “Safety Starts With Me.” This year, it’s “Safety: It takes all of us” and its focus is on putting an end to distracted driving.

More enforcement on texting laws
Based on the new findings from a public opinion poll conducted by the National Safety Council (NSC), 73% of respondents think there should be more enforcement of texting laws, while only 22% said the present level of enforcement is fine. In addition, 52% of poll participants chose penalties such as a point system, which could lead to the loss of a driver’s license or increased insurance costs, while 51% favored various levels of penalties for first and repeat offenses. The results of the poll show that the public prefers stronger and stricter penalties. This is because most people acknowledge the thought that it will take more than an awareness campaign to stop the dangerous behavior of distracted driving.

Safety measures
National Safety Month is a good time for all Kentucky motorists to practice safety measures and ways to end distracted driving. As a Kentucky Accident Attorney and a motorist, too, here are some things we can do:

  • Make the commitment to drive phone-free.
  • Put your phone on silent mode so you won’t get distracted or even tempted to text or read messages.
  • If it’s an emergency and you have to answer a phone call or send a text message, it’s best to pull over before taking that emergency phone call.
  • Don’t take selfies while driving. Stay focused.
  • Use apps such as TextLimit that will prevent you from sending a text, calling or even surfing the web.

If you have been injured as a result of distracted driving, make sure to report the accident to police immediately. They will fill out an accident report that could be used later if the accident becomes a case. Also, we can’t say this enough, seek medical assistance to treat your injuries. If you choose to wait, and you start to feel pain days after the accident, this could hurt your case. It’s also advised that you contact a Kentucky personal injury attorney to know what your legal options are. They will lead you through the legal maze and help you get the maximum payment from your case.
