5-Year-Old Boy Killed By Drunk Driver

It happened just after 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014 on Grandel Place in Pleasure Ridge Park? Unfortunately, a 5-year-old boy, his older brother and their father were on the sidewalk when a car hopped the curb and ran over the boy. Police said the driver fled the scene. However, officers were able to locate the vehicle and the driver later that night. The driver was identified as 24-year-old Edward Pearce, and he was taken into custody. Police believe that Pearce was intoxicated or under the influence of some sort of intoxicant when he hit the boy. Pearce faces multiple charges, including murder, DUI, hit-and-run and possession of a controlled substance.

Don’t drink and drive
This article is an example of why we should never drink and drive. However, what’s sad is people will continue to do it. Here are some statistics about drunk driving in America:

• There are between 50-75% convicted drunk drivers who will continue to drive on a suspended license.
• On average, one in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime.
• Only time will sober a person up. Drinking coffee (even strong coffee), exercising or taking a cold shower will not help.
• Every day in America, about 28 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes.

These are some shocking statistics, but the bottom line is, drinking and driving will never end well. It impairs your judgment, reaction skills and thought process. Combine those factors in with a vehicle and you have a recipe for disaster. To be a good driver, you need to be aware of your surroundings. When you drink and drive, you can’t do that, which leads to accidents like the one above. Know your limits and drink responsibly.
