Tougher Law to Protect Bicyclists and Pedestrians in Kentucky

Posted on Jan 07, 2009

Today is the day many cyclists have been waiting for.  The Kentucky Legislature convenes today and the process of bills becoming laws begins.  In a bill prefiled and sponsored by Rep. Jim Wayne bicyclists and pedestrians will be better protected.

If this bill becomes a law a new criminal charge will be established called vehicular assault.  It will give police the authority to charge motorists involved with crashes with cyclists and pedestrians.  Under current law it is very difficult to file charges against a motorist if they have hit a pedestrian or cyclist .  The purpose of this proposed law is make the streets safer by putting more responsibility on drivers.

Rep. Wayne has estimated that testimony on this particular bill will take place as early as late January and is hopeful it will become law by March.  For more information on how a bill becomes a law go to http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/kidspages/billtoal.htm.

I am anxiously awaiting this law.  As an avid cyclist I am glad to see that there is some movement to make the streets safer.  If you are a cyclist and would like more information please visit my website at www.mikeschaferlaw.com.
