In 2007 across the state of Kentucky there were listed 861motor vehicle fatalities. As of December 28th, 2008 there have been 811 of the same type fatalities. Included in these fatalities are motorcycle, ATV and trucking accidents. This noticeable decrease is seen on a national level as well.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has reported that fatalities are down approximately 10 percent and Kentucky State Police are reporting a 6 percent decrease. There are many factors that could be the reason for the decline.
On the Kentucky state level Kentucky State Police Sergeant David Jude attributes the decline to higher gas prices so the volume on the roads were less. He also credits the enforcement initiatives by the KSP as another reason for the decline. Some of the initiatives include patrolling areas around Friday night high school football games and increasing seatbelt usage.
