May is National Motorcycle Safety Month
As spring steps into our lives the days will become longer, the temperatures will rise and the activity on the streets will become greater. We will start to see more bicyclists, joggers, skaters and motorcyclist. May has been designated Motorcycle Safety Month. In 1998 there were over 2,200 motorcycle fatalities nationally. That number has increased every year since then. In 2009 there were over 5,000 motorcycle fatalities. In 1998 there were 49,000 motorcycle
riders injured in motorcycle accidents. That number has grown to over 96,000 in 2009.
This May is to serve as a reminder to motorists and other road users to look out for and “share the road” with motorcycle riders, while motorcycle riders are reminded to follow the rules of the road, wear safety helmets and other protective gear that will increase their visibility, and never ride impaired by alcohol or drugs. All road users are reminded to never drive, bicycle, walk or ride while distracted. There are several aspects of motorcycle safety to remember for both the cyclists and motorists ranging from the obvious, be seen to some less obvious. One of the less obvious is deciding if you have the unique set of skills needed to even ride a motorcycle.
As the month goes on you can look to my website for blogs on motorcycle safety. Be safe and share the road. The Schafer Law Office
