Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist Protection
If you are injured in an automobile accident in Kentucky by someone who does not have insurance there is a coverage you can purchase that will pay you for your out of pocket expenses and your pain and suffering. This is called Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM). This coverage can be waived but never should be. It provides financial protection to you and your family.

If you are injured in an automobile accident and the person does have insurance but it is not enough to cover all of your bills you can purchase another kind of insurance that will help you in that situation. This insurance is called Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM). Just like with UM this coverage should not be waived.

There are many, many people traveling the roads these days that do not have car insurance r their insurance is not enough to cover your pain and suffering if you are injured in a car accident. Their irresponsibility can financially devastate you and your family if you are involved in an accident with them.

When meeting with your insurance agent it is a good idea to ask him/her for the most UM and UIM coverage you can afford. By increasing your coverage your premium will increase as well but not by very much. If you decide to double your coverage that does not mean your premium will double. If you quadruple your coverage your premium will not quadruple. It will only increase a small amount when you purchase these added coverages. Again, ask your agent.

One thing to keep in mind is that your UM or UIM coverage cannot exceed your liability limits. It is always a good idea to have as much coverage as is economically feasible for you and your particular circumstances.
