It has been reported that two people have lost their lives due to alcohol related accidents in Kentucky this weekend.
Friday evening, in Ashland, KY Russ Bellomy was killed and his 12-year-old was critically injured when the motorcycle they were riding was hit head on by a pickup truck. 21-year-old Billy Barker was the man driving the pickup truck and was determined to be under the influence of alcohol when he crossed the center of the road striking the motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle, Mr. Bellomy, died at the scene before the emergency medical team arrived.
Billy Barker was served with a murder warrant this morning after the Boyd County Commonwealth's Attorney filed a murder charge against him. His bond is set for $1,000,000 and he is being detained in the Boyd County Detention Center. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:00 this afternoon.
In a separate accident on Friday night in Pikeville, KY alcohol is suspected to be the cause. Shawn David Allen, a 34-year-old from Taylorsville, NC was pronounced dead at the scene while his female passenger, Gloria Hunt, had to be taken by air from Pikeville Medical Center to St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington. This accident is still under investigation.
As a member of the Fatal Accident Support Team with the Commonwealths Attorney Office in Jefferson County in the late 80’s I had the assignment of responding to the scene of fatalities where drug or alcohol involvement was suspected. These accidents are tragic and in most cases could have been avoided if there was no alcohol involvement. Don’t drink and drive! The consequences can be devastating.
