A 16-year-old Western High School student, Adrienne White, was struck by a black Mitsubishi Eclipse car last February 08, 2011 early Tuesday morning. The automobile accident happened just before 7 a.m. when the teen tried to cross Cane Run Road and Lees Lane in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.
She was with two other girls who are walking to school when they reportedly attempted to cross the street and outside of a crossroad. The two were safe but Adrienne White was in critical condition with severe injuries and was taken to University Hospital and underwent surgery for a head injury. Unfortunately, Adrienne White didn't survive the crash and passed at 8:42pm of the same day.
Louisville Metro Police Dept. spokeswoman Carey Klain says that no charges are expected to be filed against the driver since his car was not speeding. His car was being held at the LMPD impound lot.
Police say that a crossing guard is posted every morning at the crosswalk located just a short distance down the road from where the incident happened but, the accident happened just before his shift started.
Many commented that this intersection is really dangerous especially in the dark, for school kids from both Western High and Farnsley Middle School. One simply can't see pedestrians at night when turning south onto Cane Run road because there are no streetlights. If pedestrians aren't crossing with the "Walk" light it can be very deadly.
Others pointed out those walking routes to this school need safety improvements-- not only for those walking and crossing the road but also for car drivers so the driver will get visible reminders to slow down and watch for pedestrians crossing, whether at an intersection or anywhere along the road.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the White family.
