TYPE: School bus pushed over embankment injuring two children and truck driver.
Tuesday morning a sickening sight was beheld in the community of Athol, Kentucky when a school bus was pushed on a 35 foot embankment.
According to the
Lee County Sheriffs Deputies the accident occurred when a pickup truck being driven by Randy Gabbard was traveling east on Kentucky 52 when a head start
school bus pulled into the truck’s path. Unfortunately the truck was not able to avoid the bus crashing into the bus. The collision caused both the truck and the bus to go over the embankment and fall 35 feet. According to witnesses the bus was standing on its nose at the bottom of the embankment.
Injured were 4-year-old Aaron Childers, 5-year-old Timmy Johnson, the only two children on the bus, and the driver of the truck. All injuries are reported to be minor at this time. Emergency responders have reported that both children were wearing seatbelts which prevented them from going through the windshield.
The fact that there were only two children on the bus and that they were both wearing seatbelts kept this accident from being a horrific tragedy. I hope the injured recover completely and quickly. I am interested in knowing what made the bus pull into the path of the truck.
