Clark Memorial Bridge in Louisville, Kentucky was shut down for about three hours Wednesday evening, January 25th due to the investigation of a pedestrian-bicycle-car injury accident. MetroSafe and Jeffersonville Police received calls at around 6:15 about a pedestrian, Michael Amick, who had been struck on the bridge.
Jeffersonville Police Department Detective Todd Hollis said a bicyclist and pedestrian were traveling in opposite directions on the sidewalk on the east side of the Clark Memorial Bridge. The bicyclist was headed northbound and hit a woman who was walking southbound toward Louisville. Due to the collision, the woman fell into the roadway where she was struck by a Mitsubishi Eclipse. The driver of the vehicle called 911 for help.
The pedestrian was transported to University Hospital in Louisville with serious head injuries. No other injuries were reported in this accident. The bicyclist and driver of the vehicle were tested for impairment as a standard in crashes resulting in serious injury. Hollis said that there was no indication that the either was impaired. They are not expecting to file charges against them.
As a personal injury attorney, one should not take risk on walking or bicycling on roadways especially during at night unless you will be wearing bright or reflective clothing. There is a bicycle lane on the bridge that the bicyclist should have been using. I hope and pray for the pedestrian that she will have a fast recovery and her injuries will not be life-threatening. It is so important for us to be alert at all times and be safe on our Kentucky roads.
Insurance coverage should be available to cover the injuries the pedestrian sustained. Even thought there is no fault on the car that hit the pedestrian the vehicle's PIP insurance should pay the first $10,000.00 of medical bills. As for pain and suffering the pedestrian will look to any insurance the bicyclist had as well as there own policies.
