Early Sunday morning on Bardstown Road in the Fern Creek area 47-year-old James Deramus was struck and killed. He was attempting to cross the road when he was hit by a SUV traveling in the southbound lane. The force of the impact sent him into the northbound lane where he was struck a again, the second time by a truck. Demarus was transported to University Hospital where he died.
At the time of the accident it was raining and had been for sometime so the roads were damp and most likely slick. Demarus was also wearing dark clothes making it difficult for him to be seen in the early hours. According to the police charges will most likely not be filed against either of the drivers.
This is the time of year to be especially alert as both a driver and a
pedestrian. Shorter days and weather can make it more difficult for pedestrians to be seen. With that in mind drivers need to be more alert and pedestrians need to exercise added caution when crossing busy streets to prevent
injuries and fatalities.
