Due to such a high number of motorcycle fatalities the
Navy and
Marines have created a special training mandatory for sport bike riders. Sport bikes (motorcycles) differ from cruising motorcycles in that they are faster, up to 160 miles per hour, and easier to maneuver.
Within the past year 58 sailors and Marines have been killed on motorcycles and 50 of the 58 were on sport bikes. The
Army, which has a similar program, has had 36 soldiers die within the same time period on sport bikes. The causes of the accidents have followed a pattern which includes excessive speed, poor cornering and insufficient braking. It should be noted that there has been no link to combat training and these accidents and is difficult to pinpoint a specific cause.
These courses make sense. Before a person gets a drivers license they need to pass a written test, have a learning permit period then pass a road test. Even though motorcyclists have the same rules of the road they are more exposed. They have added safety measures to take into consideration to prevent injury.
