New Federal Regulation Designed to Reduce Fatigued Driving- Louisville, Kentucky Truck Accident Attorney
DATE: April 2, 2010TYPE: Federal regulation will now require electronic recorders to be installed in problem truckers.
Federal regulation will now require electronic devices to be installed in trucks that continually violate time limits behind the wheel. The recorder will automatically record the number of hours drivers spend operating their vehicles. There are rules in place that will allow truckers only a certain number of driving hours to prevent driver fatigue. There is apparently a problem with drivers attempting to “skirt” these rules putting motorists on the highways at risk.
This regulation comes on the heels of a terrible tragedy in Munfordville, Kentucky where a tractor-trailer crossed the median and striking a van. Ten occupants of the van as well as the truck driver were all killed in the accident. There were no skid marks on the highway which is an indication to some independent safety experts that the truck driver may have fallen asleep.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration the recorders will only be required for the companies which have been flagged during m on-site compliance reviews.
This is, in my opinion, a great advance for the safety of our roads. I would like to see it installed in all tractor-trailers. Driver fatigue is a dangerous problem.
