One of the biggest problems faced by
Louisville Metro Police Department-Traffic Unit is speeders racing into metro Louisville. In southern Indiana on I-65 south the speed limit is 70 miles per hour. Upon entering the Louisville city limits the speed limit drops to 55 miles per hour. The L.M.P.D. has increased the number of patrol cars along that stretch of the highway in an effort to slow drivers therefore making a safer highway.
This increased patrol is visible in other areas such as the Gene Snyder Freeway, the Watterson Expressway and I-65 south of downtown. These efforts have made a huge difference on the safety of I-65. Last year there were 7 fatalities on I-65 but as of October of 2008 there have not been any fatal accidents. We all know that a truck driver must slow down to safely negotiate hospital curve. We are all safer due to the efforts of the L.M.P.D.
According to Officer Greg Kellerman, L.M.P.D. Traffic Unit, there are two things it is the driver’s responsibility to know. They need to know the speed limit and how fast they are going. Auto accidents can have a wide range of consequences, financially, physically and emotionally. Anything a driver can do to avoid an accident should be done. It is your responsibility to know the law and how fast you are traveling.
Also, in today’s economic environment more and more people are driving without
insurance. It is important that you take matters into your own hands and make sure that you have insurance that will financially protect your family should you be in an accident involving an uninsured driver. Make sure you have
uninsured motorist coverage as part of your automobile insurance policy. Also, check your limits. Raising your limits is less expensive than you think, a few dollars could make a huge difference if you are someone in your family is in an accident.
