Basic Safety Tips for Motorcyclists-Kentucky Motorcycle Accident Attorney, Mike Schafer

TYPE:     Kentucky Motorcycle Accident Attorney Mike Schafer offers tips for safe riding

May is national Motorcycle Safety Awareness month.  As the temperatures rise and hours of daylight extend into later in the evening we will see more and more motorcyclists on the road.  There will be “bike nights” several nights in the week as well as some that just want to go for a ride.  Because of the vulnerability of the riders there are a few safety measures to consider before getting on a motorcycle for a ride.

The main safety concern is to make sure that as a rider you are seen by other motorists.  Making sure your headlight is working and remains on both day and night is one way to increase your visibility.  Wearing reflective decals and brightly colored clothing is another way to be seen.  If you are not sure another motorist sees you use your horn.  Be aware of blind spots and avoid them if possible.

Protective clothing is another important factor in reducing injuries if you are in an accident.  Protective clothing consists of quality helmets and eyewear, as I mentioned earlier, bright clothing is important as well.  Long sleeves and long pants made of leather and other heavy material can protect you skin from very painful road burns.  Be aware of what is between you and the pavement if you are in an accident.

One of the most important of the safety strategies is your mental strategy.  Always be on the look out for changing conditions on the road and be prepared to adapt to those changes.  Allow enough room to react to other motorists and their actions and allow those motorists enough room to react to you actions.  Watch for turning vehicles and always indicate when you are going to turn.  Do not weave between lanes but ride in the area of the lanes where you will be most visible.  Do not ride when you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  Your reaction time is lessened and that could be tragic.

Have fun but be safe, be visible and know the rules of the road.
