of a Boy and Several Students Were Injured

May 16, 2011 was
supposed to be a most memorable day of pupils from Carlisle County Elementary
School. It was a day spent in a
recreation center with activities like swimming, playing basketball, jumping
rope and games as a reward for reaching their reading goals. But sadly, it turned out to be an
unforgettable and terror day not only to the pupils but also to the parents.
There were at least 27
children and several adults on board a school bus that was returning from the
recreation center 20 miles away in Paducah and heading to the county’s one
public elementary school when the bus veered off a two-lane highway. It drifted off on the right side of the
highway, swerved back across the road and rolled over several times into a
ravine and came to rest about 50 to 60 feet off the road. The reason of the accident was still being
investigated. Authorities saw tire marks
in the road at the crash scene but had not yet determine whether the bus was
over speeding.
A 6-year-old boy was
killed from the incident and several other students and adults on the bus
including the driver were injured. The
boy was declared dead at the crash scene, said Carlisle County Coroner Steve
Freeman.
According from a
Kentucky State Police Trooper Dean Patterson, some children were trapped
briefly before they were rescued. There
were sixteen children and an adult that were sent to three area hospitals for
various injuries. An adult chaperone was
airlifted to a Memphis, Tenn., hospital and the bus driver was also airlifted
to a hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Five children were admitted in Lourdes Hospital in Paducah.
