Dogs Can Be Man’s Best Friend

I love dogs.  They are always happy to see you.  They seem to never have a bad day. Despite the danger of bites or attacks from dogs, they still have positive traits that we love. Dogs can be great companions, loyal friends, protectors, heroes, and give love unconditionally.

Have you heard about The Case of Old Drum? Senator George Graham Vest gave a beautiful and emotional closing argument of man’s best friend.  He won the court battle and the hearts of dog lovers through his “eulogy to the dog”, which is what has his closing argument in the Old Drum case during the 1870 came to be known as. I am proud to say The late George Graham Vest was my wife’s great-great uncle. He was known as one of the finest extemporaneous speakers of his time. Read the “eulogy to the dog” and you will agree.

Old Drum was immortalized in a statue on the Johnson Country Courthouse lawn in Warrensburg, onSeptember 23, 1958through the efforts of many dog lovers and the direction of Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce.

As a personal injury attorney, it made me proud to say I am related to George Vest, even if it is only by marriage. His words have stood the test of time and remain special to the hearts of dog lovers.  He pointed out how a dog’s existence changed a man’s life. His statements make a dog lover shed a tear. Truly, a man’s best friend is his dog when they are loved and treated as such.
