Pedestrian and motor vehicle accidents are a life threatening problem throughout the world. When cars collide with pedestrians, there is a high potential for serious injuries and fatalitiies.
There was a pedestrian accident that happened on Thursday evening last February 17, 2011 on Preston Highway, Kentucky. The victim has been identified as Randal Cates, 54-year-old, of Louisville. He was struck by a Sport Utility Vehicle when he was trying to cross in the 5700 block of Preston Highway just south of East Indian Trail, according to Louisville Metro Police. Cates was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:39 p.m. with multiple blunt-force injuries as the cause of his death. Metro Police say the driver didn’t realized he hit anything until he saw what happened and drove to a nearby business to call 911. He had a green light and appeared to be going the speed limit but the pedestrian was not in the crosswalk. At this time, no charges are expected to be filed.
As a practicing attorney in Louisville, Kentucky I have heard and seen several accidents involving pedestrians in that stretch of Preston Highway wherein the area is very dark and particularly dangerous at night. This is a wake-up call to improve the design and safety measures of roadways and to implement educational and community programs in order to reduce pedestrian collisions.
