Within the past 12 months three cyclists have died on Kentucky roads. In each incident yhe bicyclist was struck by an automobile. Also, in each case there were no charges filed against the driver. As recently as last week Vance Kokojan was riding his bike to work when he was struck and killed. Three months ago Kenneth Chandler was also struck and killed while riding his bike. He was actually hit by an off-duty LMPD officer. A year ago George Cronen, Jr. was on the Second Street Bridge when he was hit by a van, killing him. Cyclist would like for motorist to be held responsible for their actions, particularly if their actions result in the loss of a life.
Louisville, KY Mayor Jerry Abramson and Metro Police Chief Robert White met earlier this week in an effort to promote safety to cyclists. Both White and Abramson agree that both drivers and cyclists need to be aware of each other on the road. Chief White has allowed as how his officers have become more aggressive in these instances but there is only so far the law will allow them to go. He reiterated problem with the law that presents a challenge to his department. If his officers don't witness an accident they cannot site the individual who is responsible. The exception to this law is in the case of a DUI, it is not necessary for the officers to witness theaccident.
Local cyclist want to see legal changes soon, before someone else is killed. Mayor Abramson has said "Cyclists and drivers can effectively share the road, but both groups have got to make a concerted effort to look out for each other." I agree. It is a two way street that will make us all safer.
I am an attorney by day and a cyclist by evening and weekends. It is alway a paramount concern of mine when I am on the road, either as a cyclist or a driver, to be aware of the other. By law cyclists and motorist have equal rights to be on the road and mutual awareness and concern can save lives.
