It almost doesn’t seem right with all the accident news you hear every day, but believe it or not, traffic deaths in the US are in a historic decline. In 2011, auto accidents fell to the lowest level since 1949 according to the US government.
A total of 32,367 people died in 2011 in traffic accidents that include auto, motorcycle, truck, bicycle and pedestrian accidents. That is a 1.9% decrease from 2010 and a 25% decrease from 2005, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
According to the report, deaths dropped by 4.6% for occupants of passenger cars and light trucks, but rose 20% for large trucks. Fatalities rose 8.7% for bicyclists, 3% for pedestrians, and 2.1% for motorcycle riders.
According to the report in Kentucky, auto accident fatalities dropped from 760 in 2010 to 721 in 2011, or a 5.1% decline.
There are many things we can attribute to this positive statistic. More people using seat belts along with safety advances in the vehicles being produced. Looking at this as a personal injury attorney I am thrilled that the trend is moving to safer roads. We still need to look at the number, last year 721 families lost a loved one on a road in Kentucky. Please do what you can to be safe, use your seat belt, obey traffic laws and do what you can to lower your distractions while driving.
