It almost doesn’t seem right with all the accident news you hear every day, but believe it or not, traffic deaths in the US are in a historic decline. In 2011, auto accidents fell to the lowest level since 1949 according to the US government.
A total of 32,367 people died in 2011 in traffic accidents that include auto, motorcycle, truck, bicycle and pedestrian accidents. That is a 1.9% decrease from 2010 and a 25% decrease from 2005, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
According to the report, deaths dropped by 4.6% for occupants of passenger cars and light trucks, but rose 20% for large trucks. Fatalities rose 8.7% for bicyclists, 3% for pedestrians and 2.1% for motorcycle riders.
According to the report in Kentucky, auto accident fatalities dropped from 760 in 2010 to 721 in 2011, or a 5.1% decline.
There are many things we can attribute to this positive statistic. More people using seat belts along with safety advances in the vehicles being produced. Looking at this as a personal injury attorney I am thrilled that the trend is moving to safer roads. Please do what you can to be safe, use your seat belt, obey traffic laws and do what you can to lower your distractions while driving.
