Everyone has heard of the horrific skiing accident that has taken the life of 45-year-old actress Natasha Richardson.  In what seemed to be a minor fall on a ski hill in Canada she suffered an unusual brain injury that cost her her life.

After her fall she appeared to be fine.  Lucid and even light-hearted about her accident.  It wasn’t until a few hours later her health began to fail.  She was transported to a hospital in Canada then was transferred to a hospital in New York.  On Wednesday she died due to a epidural hematoma due to blunt impact to the head.  An epidural hematoma is defined as a type of intracranial hematoma (blood clot or clots) that often results from a skull fracture.

Epidural hematoma should be suspected in any individual who sustains head trauma.  Symptoms include:

    * Headache
    * Nausea/vomiting
    * Seizures
    * Focal neurologic deficits (eg, visual field cuts, aphasia, weakness, numbness)

This tragic accident reinforces tow of my strongest beliefs.  Whenever you have been in an accident it is vital to get checked out by a doctor, even if you feel that you have not been injured.  Secondly, helmets can save lives.  My wife, kids and I never hit the slopes without our helmets and I never get on my bike without my helmet.
